Operating estimate: net revenue − product − labour − occupancy − other expenses. This is not an accounting profit-and-loss statement and excludes omitted items, tax, financing, depreciation and professional adjustments.
What this restaurant profit estimate includes
The calculator subtracts recorded food and beverage cost, total labour, rent and occupancy, and other operating expenses from net revenue for the same month. It also combines product and labour into prime cost.
- ✓ Use revenue excluding tax where appropriate
- ✓ Keep every input in the same period
- ✓ Include employer labour costs
- ✓ Group utilities, commissions and operating overhead consistently
How to read operating margin
Operating margin divides the estimated operating profit by net revenue. A positive percentage means the included revenue exceeds the included costs; a negative result means the stated costs exceed revenue. Neither result proves that the input coverage is complete.
Why the total needs operational evidence
Profit changes when revenue mix, supplier prices, recipe usage, portions, waste, staffing and occupancy change. A management system is useful when the owner can move from the result to those source records instead of seeing an unexplained percentage.
What is deliberately excluded
The tool does not infer taxes, loan interest, depreciation, capital expenditure, owner drawings, exceptional items or missing expenses. Treatment varies by business and jurisdiction, so final accounts belong in the appropriate accounting workflow.

Frequently asked questions
Clear, verifiable answers
How do you calculate restaurant operating profit?
For this operational estimate, subtract recorded product, labour, occupancy and other operating expenses from net revenue for the same period. Add every material cost that belongs to the scope before relying on the result.
What is restaurant operating profit margin?
It is estimated operating profit divided by corresponding net revenue, multiplied by 100. The percentage is only as complete as the revenue and costs entered.
Is prime cost the same as total restaurant cost?
No. Prime cost normally combines product cost and direct labour. It excludes rent, utilities and other overhead, so it cannot represent complete profitability by itself.
Does this replace restaurant accounting?
No. It is a transparent management estimate. Bookkeeping, statutory accounts, tax, financing and professional adjustments remain in the appropriate accounting system and with qualified advisers.
